Data storage device
A data storage device is used to record information or store data. There are many different kinds of data storage devices which are used to record different information. It can be done using all kinds of energy, like manual power, acoustic vibrations or electromagnetic energy.
Before people used the computer to record information they used other forms. Handwriting is one example. Before the book print was discovered every book or paper had to be copied manually. That means that people would copy information from a book for months or even years before someone else could read it. This made preserving knowledge very difficult and very expensive. People also used to draw and paint information on paper or other materials. They would draw or paint schematic plans for machines or maps.
Nowadays the computer is used to record information. Storing the data can be done in different ways. Some people type their information using the keyboard of the computer or laptop. Other people use microphones or cameras to insert data.
Different devices are used to store the data such as CDs, DVDs, USB flash drives, memory cards, microchips and many more. Most of these devices are very small but can record a lot of data. Some of them are portable and others are not. Portable devices can be discs, tapes, memory cards and flash drives. They are used to store data from one source and then manually bring them to another computer to share files.
CDs are mostly used to store music data. They can be bought everywhere and there are a lot of different kinds of music. Rock music, Hip-Hop or classical music are just a few examples for the many different kinds of music. DVDs are mainly used to store video data, movies for example. Most of the people own a lot of different DVDs because they like to have all of their favorite movies to watch them whenever they want. CDs and DVDs are the most common storage device. Most of the people own and use them. A lot of people do not even know that they are using other kinds of storage devices every day.
